“We received many compliments from people who found Safia’s presentation inspiring, the best of the morning sessions. The content was inspiring, moving, eye-opener. Although the clothing industry is far from our own, her insights on supply chain are relevant indeed. Her message on responsible supply chains, reducing carbon did resonate with the audience. She had the audience’s full attention after the first minute. Everyone agreed she is a great speaker. Safia made real effort to understand our event and industry and to raise the debate on sustainability.”

The Association of European Adhesive & Sealant Industry

After working for Creative Review magazine in London, Safia’s travels in Asia brought the reality of social injustice and environmental destruction front of mind. She decided to use her experience in marketing and publishing to promote social, arts and environmental publications and organizations.

In 1990, she moved from London to Tokyo where she turned her interests into a campaigning organization, Global Village out of which People Tree Japan was launched. People Tree became the highest profile Fair Trade company in Japan, with thousands of stockists and three flagship stores. In 2000, Safia launched People Tree in London and today the company sells internationally. Safia led the business as Global CEO, Creative Director, Head of Fair Trade supply chain development and led its brand development through marketing and PR in Europe and Japan.

After a long and successful career, Safia has taken a step away from operations to focus on sustainability and sharing her knowledge and experience with others who want to put social impact and sustainability at the heart of their organisation.

People Tree is an inspiration to hundreds of thousands of designers, brands, customers and suppliers and sets a new bar for end to end Fair Trade and fashion production.

Safia and her team have been responsible for the first Fair Trade designer collaboration with Vogue Japan magazine, featuring high profile international designers and celebrities in 2007.
